How To Determine Your Body Type

There are five female body types.  I have stated many times and it bears repeating, the fit is the cornerstone of style.  To establish the foundation for your personal fit it is imperative that you are aware and understand your body type and your correct measurements.

Below are descriptions to help you determine your body type.  Additionally, we provide examples of famous women for each of the five female body types.

Pear

If your hips are the widest part of your body, you have what we call a triangle shape, otherwise known as a pear shape.  The pear shape is the most common female body type. 

  • Your waist is wider than your bust.
  • You consider yourself to have fuller hips.
  • You have narrower shoulders in comparison to your hips.
  • You have a fuller rear.

Famous women who are pears include:

  • Kim Kardashian
  • Beyonce
  • Helen Mirin
  • Marilyn Monroe
  • Jennifer Love-Hewitt

In general, with this shape, you want to show off the thinness of your waist and plan on showing your legs.

Inverted Triangle

 If the widest part of your body is your breasts and you have wide shoulders, you have what is known as an inverted triangle body shape.  Generally, women achieve this body type by training.  It is a very athletic type with a narrow hipline and wide shoulders.

  • You may have strong-looking shoulders.
  • Your body figure may project a sporty and athletic physique.
  • Great legs often come with this body shape.
  • Your hips look straight given your shoulders being broad.
  • You have little to no waist definition.

Rectangle

This body type was in vogue in the '90s.  It is best described as having a straight boyish silhouette without too many defining curves. Rectangles are lean with straight torsos. 

  • Your hips and bust are balanced.
  • Your waist is not very defined.
You probably have a bottom that is more flat than round.
Rectangle Body Type
  • You tend to gain weight in your torso first and then your upper thighs and arms.
  • Your lower legs are always shapely and one of your best assets.

  • Nicole Kidman
  • Gweneth Paltrow

Apple

Apples were genetically gifted them with waists that are not that thin and they look like divas from the '40s and '50s.  Apples have incredible sexy potential.

  • A wide torso.
  • Broad shoulders.
  • An average-to-fuller bust.
  • An undefined waist.
  • Apple Body TypeA flat bottom.
  • Hips that are narrower than your bust.

  • Drew Barrymore
  • Catherine Zeta-Jones
  • Jessica Simpson
  • Adele

Apples do well when using drapey fabrics that are asymmetrical, not tight at the waist so you take focus away from the waist.

Hourglass

The hourglass is the most famous body type and is many men's fantasy type.

  • Your hips and shoulders have about the same width.
  • You have round and sloping shoulders.
  • You have a well-defined waistline.
  • Hourglass Body Type .  
  • Your buttocks are rather round.
  • Your lower hips are wider than your high hips.
  • Your thighs are full but narrower than the lower hips.
  • Hourglass body shapes gain weight through the hips and above the waist.

  • Jennifer Lopez...the reigning Queen of Curves
  • Kate Winslet
  • Marilyn Monroe
  • Tyra Banks

     Now that you know how to determine your body type and have examples of celebrities who share your body type, pay attention to what they wear:

    Each image you see of them in pictures. film or in person ask yourself the following questions:

    • What are they trying to accentuate?
    • What are they trying to conceal?
    • How well are they working with their body type (They don't always get it right)?
    • What would you modify to improve their look?
